Some 40 women of an organisation stopped gambling in open space in Kurigram's Nageshwari upazila on Sunday.
The organisation's leaders said the holding of gambling on the premises of bamboo cluster and near marshland was contributing to rise in theft and harrassment of women in the locality.
Against that backdrop, Kutinaodanga Women Development Association chairperson Noorjahan Begum and general secretary Fahima Begum, accompanied by others, went to the spot and demanded that gambling be stopped.
Chairman of local Santoshpur Union Parishad Liakat Ali extended his support to the women's initiative and assured them that he was with them.
"A section of people of the locality was using gambling as means to make others paupers. They earlier fled once we tried to catch them. This time around, the women sought our support in stopping gambling and we extended our support," he told Prothom Alo.
Noorjahan Begum said the gambling was being held for quite some time. "We're then compelled to get united to stop this social ills," she added.
