President for dredging rivers running from Meghalaya to Bhairab

UNB . Sunamganj | Update:

President Abdul Hamid has said dredging of the rivers running from Meghalaya border to Bhairab Bazar is a must to ensure the passage of floodwater and thus save crops in haor areas from flashfloods.

"Paddy fields in haor areas cannot be protected by only constructing embankments there," he said.

The President was addressing a views-exchange meeting with local public representatives, senior citizens, professionals and government officials at Zila Parisahd auditorium here on Monday night.

He said, "The navigability of rivers in haors must be improved by dredging. Local public representatives and the government should take initiatives in this regard."

Expressing sympathy for the flashflood victims in haor areas, Hamid said the construction of sustainable submerged embankment is mandatory in haor regions apart from capital dredging in the rivers.

Voicing concern over the early flashflood in haor areas caused by the onrush of water from Indian hills, he said: "Being an
inhabitant of haor and also a son of farmer, I'm very much anxious about the situation and we need a permanent solution to this."

"I've already talked to prime minister Sheikh Hasina who already assured me of providing necessary assistance in this regard," the President added.

He said the affected farmers will get assistance until the next boro season.

President Hamid gave the flashflood victims a patient hearing, assuring them of taking necessary steps to overcome the situation after consultation with the authorities concerned, especially the prime minister, immediately.

State minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, local MPs - Muhibur Rahman Manik, Moazzem Hossain Ratan, Rezwan Ahmed Toufiq, Fazlur Rahman Mejbah, Shamsunnahar Rabbani, Joya Sen Gupta, and deputy commissioner of Sunamganj Sheikh Rafiqul Islam, among others, spoke at the meeting.

Earlier on Monday, president Hamid held a views-exchange-meeting with leaders of the Sunamganj Zila Lawyers Association, and visited Sunamganj Oitijya Jadhughar (Sunamganj Heritages Museum).

On Tuesday morning, he also exchanged views with local freedom fighters, his fellow fighters of the Sunamganj during the 1971 Liberation War.

The president called upon them to gear up the present government's development activities and disseminate the real history of the Liberation War 1971 to the new generation.
