Food minister Quamrul Islam on Sunday said the government has set a target to procure 15 lakh, or 1.5 million metric tons of paddy, rice and wheat from farmers during the upcoming Boro season.
The government has set a target to procure 7 lakh, or 700,000 metric tons of paddy at Tk 24 per kilogram, while 8 lakh or 800,000 metric tons of rice at Tk 34 and Tk 33 per kilogram and one lakh metric tons of wheat at Tk 28 per kilogram, he said.
The rice and paddy procurement drive will start from 2 May and last till 31 August while the wheat procurement will start from 18 April and last till 30 June during the harvesting period, said the minister after a meeting at the ministry.
This time the government will make the payment through account payee cheques directly, he said.
Quamrul Islam said this year the production cost of per kilogram Boro paddy is Tk 22 and Boro rice Tk 31 per kilogram, against Tk 20.70 and Tk 29 per kg respectively, last year.

Finance minister AMA Muhith, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed and committee members, among others, attended the meeting.
