A Juba League leader was shot dead and 25 others injured in clashes between two factions of Naria upazila Awami League in Shariatpur Friday evening.

The victim, Iqbal Hossain, 25, was vice-president of Rajnagar union Juba League, the youth wing of ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL).

According to Naria police and locals, supporters of Rajnagar union parishad chairman Zakir Gazi clashed with supporters of union AL president Dadon Meerbahar around 6:00pm.

Local police said the clashes occurred over a previous feud regarding the UP elections.

According to witnesses, supporters of Dadon Meerbahar beat up Zakir Gazi’s men at noon.

Later in the afternoon, Zakir Gazi’s men vandalised a shop of Dadon Meerbahar at Andarmanik Bazar and attacked his supporters with firearms.

Several explosions were heard.

At one stage, Iqbal Hossain was shot.

He was rushed to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, but on-duty physicians declared him dead in the evening. He was a follower of Dadon Meerbahar.

Dadon Meerbahar told Prothom Alo, “Since Zakir Gazi elected chairman, attacks are being conducted on leaders and activists. He shot one of my supporters to death and injured 25 others.”

On the other hand, Zakir Gazi said, “I don’t know how Iqbal was killed. But, the supporters of Dadon and Alimuzzaman Malot hacked three of my supporters and hurled bombs at them. Then the clashes ensued.”

The injured 25 are being treated at the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital.
