Bangladesh has the fifth highest number of adults who are planning to migrate to other countries seeking opportunities, shows an International Organisation for Migration (IOM) report.
It says some 800,000 young Bangladeshis are already preparing to migrate to the countries such as US and the UK.
Furthermore, almost 2 million (1.9 million) Bangladeshi adults are planning to migrate, added the report titled 'UN Global Migration Potential 2010-2015'.
One in three adults surveyed plans to migrate to even a developing country. However, the most popular destinations are the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, France, Canada, Germany and South Africa.
The IOM study reveals a trend of migration to “wide range of countries, both rich and poor, that are attracting migrants”, said William Lacy Swing, IOM director general.
Worldwide, the report found, 66 million people, or 1.3 per cent of the adult population, are planning to migrate permanently within the next 12 months.
Half of them live in just 20 countries. Nigeria tops the list and India stands second. China and Pakistan are among top 20 countries.
The report mentioned that 23 million, or 0.4 per cent of adults around the world has made preparations to move, such as applying for a visa, saving money for the trip or learning the language of their desired destination.
