Imran Sarkar gets permanent bail in PM defamation case

Imran Sarkar. File PhotoA court here on Sunday granted permanent bail to Ganajagaran Manch spokesperson Imran H Sarkar and cultural activist Sanatan Ullash in a defamation case filed for their derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, reports news agency UNB.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Masud Zaman passed the bail order after Imran and Sanatan surrendered before the court in the morning and filed a bail petition through their lawyer Jibanananda Chandra Joyonta.

On 31 May, the same court asked them to appear before it on 16 July to explain their stance.

Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Golam Rabbani filed the defamation case against the duo with the court on 31 May.

According to the case statement, Imran and Sanatan chanted defamatory slogans against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 27 May over the removal of the statue of Lady Justice from the Supreme Court premises.

On 26 May, the SC authorities removed the statue, made by sculptor Mrinal Haque.
