Police seek 10-day remand for Nayeem

Nayeem AshrafPolice on Thursday morning sought a 10-day remand for the detained Abdul Halim aka Nayeem Ashraf, one of the prime accused in the Banani rape case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) additional commissioner Monirul Islam said this while talking to reporters at the DMP office on Minto Road in the morning.

A police source said Nayeem has confessed to raping the girls in primary interrogation.

On Wednesday, police detained Nayeem Ashraf from Lauhajang upazila of Munshiganj district.

Four other accused in the case were arrested earlier.

Two female students of a private university were violated at Banani hotel named ‘The Raintree’ on 28 March after they were invited there to attend a birthday celebration programme, according to the rape victims as said in the case statement.

The victims filed the case on 6 May with the Banani police station after their 48-hour toilsome effort as the police allegedly declined to accept the case in the first place.

The five accused in the case are: Shafat Ahmed, his bodyguard Abul Kalam Azad, his driver Billal, Shafat’s friend Naeem Ashraf, and Sadman Sakif.

Two prime accused Shafat Ahmed and his friend Sadman Sakif were arrested from Sylhet on 11 May.

Accused number 5- Rahmat Ali, bodyguard of prime accused Shafat Ahmed, and the accused-4 in the case, Billal, Shafat’s car driver, were arrested in Dhaka on 15 May.
