Gas extraction from Noakhali field begins

Staff Correspondent | Update:

BAPEX-gasfieldState-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) began lifting gas from well 2 of the newly discovered Sundalpur gas field in Noakhali on Thursday.

BAPEX managing director Md Nowshad Islam told the Prothom Alo that the commercial gas extraction began at 12:00 Thursday noon.

He said the authorities have found existence of several layers of gas after digging some 3,200 metres from the surface.

“Of them, the gas layer found some 1,400 metres below the surface is larger and richer one and the gas is now being extracted from that layer.”

The BAPEX MD said some 10 million cubic feet gas could be extracted everyday from this well.

He, however, could not ascertain immediately how big the gas field is and how much gas is there in the field.

The BAPEX extracted gas earlier from this gas field using a different well, but that is closed now and that’s why the second well has been dug, he added.

The BAPEX is planning to supply gas to the Chittagong region from this gas field if sufficient volume of gas is available in this field.
