Rare catfish found in Rangamati

FishA rare species of catfish has been found in Kaptai lake recently. The scientific name of this fish, popularly known as suckermouth catfish, is Hypostomus plecostomus.

The fish was caught by local fishermen in Kaptai Lake near the Bangladesh Navy (BN) camp of Rangamati.

On information, Bangladesh Fish Development Corporation manager Mohammad Asaduzzaman, who is a commander of the BN, took the fish weighing two and a half kilograms under his custody.

"We have brought the fish to Rangamati," he said.

Another of this rare species was caught by the fishermen around three years ago, but that was a smaller one, said Md Abul Bashar, scientific officer at Bangladesh Fish Research Institute.

Since this one is around 30 centemtre long, it may be farmed in the Kaptai lake, he opined.
