Claiming himself as a freedom fighter, Akter Mia came before the freedom fighter verification committee at Patiya upazila of Chittagong last Wednesday. But the committee handed him over to the police suspecting him a member of Razakar force, collaborator of Pakistan Army. Akter Mia is a resident of Lalarkhil village in Kharna union of Patiya upazila.
AKM Samshuzzaman Chowdhury, a member of the verification committee told the newsmen, a man named Akter Mia came to the committee's office at upazila Shilpokala Academy to face an interview for being enlisted as a freedom fighter. After hearing his speech during the interview, committee members suspected him to be fake. Akter Mia gave the names of three freedom fighters as witnesses to the committee. But two witnesses Nurul Absar and Abdul Gafur, mentioned him as a Razakar. So the committee handed over him to the police.
Akter Mia told the newsmen, 'I was sent to the Pakistani military impersonating a Razakar for spying in 1971. I was with the Pakistani military for only three days. Later I fought as a freedom fighter."
Though Nurul Absar and Abdul Gafur mentioned him as a Razakar before the committee, they gave a different account about Aktar to the reporters. Nurul Absar told journalists that four people including Akter Mia were sent to the Pakistani military as informers of freedom fighters. During a fight at Kharna rail station, they returned to the freedom fighters receiving a signal from freedom fighters.
Patiya police sub-inspector Almas said they released Akter Mia under custody of two guarantors.
