Reckless driving behind 53pc road accidents

Speedy driving causes 53 per cent of the road accidents across the country while 37 per cent is caused by the drivers' recklessness, said a research on Sunday.

According to the research published by the Accident Research Institute of the Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology, 10 per cent of the accidents took place due to other causes including the state of the roads and highways.

ARI director Professor Moazzem Hossain, talking to Prothom Alo about two deadly road crashes in Faridpur and Narsingdi on 11 February and 12 February this year that left nearly 40 people dead, said reckless driving and reckless attitude drivers were behind the accidents.

In past two days, road crashes killed at least 50 people.

It also said 43 per cent of the road crashes took place on the highways.

According to Bangladesh Roads Transport Authorities (BRTA), 2,384 people were killed in the road accidents, but the Passengers Welfare Association said the numbers could be as much as 8,000.
